Theological Study for Beginners

What if you want to study but are not sure you can manage it? Maybe you are worried about the level of study or the time it will take? Why not try out one of our ‘Taster Modules’.

A ‘Taster Module’ is a chance to join a 5 or 10 week once-a-week class, at beginner’s level. You might do a limited amount of reading between classes but you would not write essays or take other assessments.

In a normal year we run the following taster modules:

Introduction to the Bible (10 weeks)
A brief starter course on Old and New Testaments, usually in the Autumn.

  • This course aims to get you thinking about – and excited about – the Bible. We spend 5 weeks looking at key issues in Matthew, Mark and Luke. Topics include how to read narratives, interpreting the parables, and Jesus’ death and resurrection. Then we spend 5 weeks looking at the beginning of the Old Testament. Topics include creation in Genesis 1, the ten commandments, and holiness. The goal is to give you confidence in reading the Bible thoughtfully and theologically. All questions and perspectives are welcome, and we enjoy learning together.

Introduction to Spirituality (5 weeks)
A look at how to go deeper in your spiritual life, usually in the Spring.

  • Prayer and spirituality invite us into a deeper relationship with the living God. As we seek to deepen our prayer, it can be bewildering to know where to start. The good news is that we are not alone, but have the wisdom of thousands of years of praying people to help us with our own discovery of God in prayer. This course seeks to equip us for our lifelong exploration in the landscape of prayer. We will reflect on God’s presence in our life journey so far; study the wisdom from the African desert fathers and mothers, Benedictine tradition, psalms and spiritual songs; and explore the use of silence and praying with Scripture (Lectio Divina).

Scripture, Prayer and Theology (3 Saturdays: Sept – Jan)
A beginner’s look at starting out in study – spaces may be limited on this course from year to year.

  • This module introduces the study of Christian tradition and theology. Students will likely have some familiarity with Scripture, with prayer, and with theology, so the module aims to develop connections between personal faith and the ways Christian thinking has developed over the centuries. You will be introduced to key terms and approaches, look at influential ideas, and develop a basis for further study. The aim is to start building the skills and confidence to pursue your own deeper understanding through the effective use of prayer, Biblical studies, and other forms of Christian scholarship.
